The Layered traps impeding Self-Nurturing for Women

Have you ever felt overwhelmed scrolling through social media, bombarded with images of the current fashion of perfect bodies, exotic retreats, and the latest wellness trends? It seems like everywhere you look on the internet, someone is onto a new diet or an exercise routine. But hold up, let's take a moment to pause, ponder and ask ourselves: What does wellness and wellbeing really mean in today's world? Is wellness really just about green smoothies and yoga poses?
We think there's more to it than meets the eye. Sure, eating well and staying active are important, but true wellness is about nurturing yourself from the inside out. As we witness the overflowing images of picture-perfect lifestyles and unattainable standards, it's essential to pause and reflect on the essence of self-nurturing and its layers.

So, what does it mean to nurture yourself? Well, at its core, it's about understanding and embracing who you are - your thoughts, feelings, experiences - all the things that make you, well, you. It's about listening to your body and giving it what it needs to thrive. Whether that's a long walk in nature, a visit to your local book store, or a nourishing meal made with love. It's like giving yourself a big, warm hug from the inside out. It's about recognizing that you are important and worthy of care.
And what about self-care? It's not just about the nice bubble baths and face masks (though those are nice too!). Self-care is about consciously choosing to look after your physical, mental, and emotional hygiene which in turn fosters well-being. It's like giving yourself permission to defrag all your systems regularly and be your own best friend, taking care of yourself in a way that feels right for you.

Self-help is another big buzzword these days, but what does it really mean? For us, it's not about having all the answers or doing everything perfectly, it's about constantly learning and applying skills to make a ‘change’. It’s about having access to tools and manuals to navigate life's twists and turns. It’s like having your own self reliable tool kit kept in a sewing box.

And here's where it gets interesting - ever heard of being a "selfist"?. It's different from being selfish, only thinking about yourself and your needs. Being a selfist is all about finding that sweet spot between looking after yourself and caring for others. It's a balance between self-love and empathy, and practicing living your life knowing that your well-being matters just as much as everyone else's.

In Carin Rubenstein's book, "The Sacrificial Mother," she talks about how becoming a "selfist" is a way to rid oneself of being sacrificial. It's a subtle yet profound shift from selflessness to self-nurturing, where Mothers and others in demanding caring roles, can find relief in prioritizing their own well-being without guilt or hesitation as they often put their own needs aside for the sake of their families or other people. Personal focus time is essential to regularly release the pressure put on us as women to just absorb and absorb until we are just stretching at the seams so to speak. We all need ways to squeeze our emotional and physical sponges out, rest, restore and recalibrate regularly.
Being a "selfist" is about reclaiming your sense of self and recognizing that it's not selfish to prioritize your own well-being. It's imperative to set boundaries, saying no when you need to, and take the time and space to do things that nourish your body and soul.

As you reflect your journey towards self-nurturing and well-being, embrace the principles of self-love and self-care and how you can incorporate self-nurturing practices into your daily routine. Whether it's going to the farmer’s market, gazing at the more visible stars in the night sky, or simply taking a moment to breathe deeply. Let these moments become a cherished part of your daily routine, guiding you towards a more balanced and fulfilling life. Remember, as you fill yourself up, then there can be abundance to flow onto others.
